Six years prior to this post, I was able to quietly wake up early in the morning, shower, get dressed, go get my morning coffee and head to the church’s prayer room before heading to work. Now a days if I want to do any of the above quietly, I have to force myself up at 5:00 am. Otherwise, I will be awakened by the hands of either my 2 year old or 4 year old around 6:30 am and then my day hectically begins.
I got a rare moment this week to really meditate on God’s word. I felt God nudged me. He was calling me to something deeper with him. My question? How in the world can I do that with three small kids and very little help? So I googled it. (smile). No really I did.
I first typed in…”How do I get closer to God with kids?”. I found nothing online that would help ME with my walk with God. All of the articles that I found focused only on teaching the KIDS how to have a relationship with God. Okay! So I then tried, “I have kids how can I get closer to God?” Same thing… nothing to help ME. So I tried, “Serving God with kids.” The SAME type of articles came up! I still didn’t get the hint. So I stepped back, prayed and pulled up my blog. It was my determined intention to document my journey on getting closer to God with small kids in tow. This is where it lead me…
It’s not really about ME. Sure it benefits me, but getting closer to God also benefits my children, my grandchildren and my potential greats. Once I birthed souls into this life, it became about how I can minister to them. Hebrews 12:1 says “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,…”. The first part of this verse refers to “so great a cloud of witnesses” while this verse most likely is referring to the faithful men and women mentioned in the previous chapter, I like to think of it as referring to my present day witnesses…my kids!
Our kids watch everything we say and do. MY personal sincere relationship with God is a MODEL for my KIDS. My motivation to pray harder, fast more, be more faithful, teach more bible studies, should be my kids! Not to mention, prayer will also help you keep your sanity (smile). Yes, I want to please God! And while God loves me and desires a deep sincere intimate relationship with me, He has also placed little souls in my care to teach His ways. Proverbs 22:6
Let’s look at it this way, motherhood is like a pitcher of water. You are the pitcher. Your kids are the fragile glasses that the water is poured into and God is the source of the water. Our first and most important job as a mother is to carry enough water to keep the glasses full! What does that mean? That means that if we don’t keep going back to the source of the water…we will be empty and so will our children!
God desires to love, comfort and guide you through this journey as a mother. Try some of these short tips to start:
- Spend a few minutes in prayer when you wake up
- Read a short motherhood devotional each day
- Find one scripture (memory verse) to teach your kids each week
- Find and attend a bible teaching church in your area
